Zarna Garg

“The Funny Brown Mom”

Proudly representing brown women everywhere, Zarna Garg is a mom and lawyer turned award-winning screenwriter and stand-up comedian, highlighting the immigrant and American experience with her own signature style.

Zarna has recently taken TikTok by storm, with her latest comedy videos gaining more than 13 million views and counting!

Her debut romantic comedy screenplay “Rearranged” won the Best Comedy Screenplay Award at the 2019 Austin Film Festival (placing #1 out of 11,000 scripts), and was also a 2019 Academy Nicholl Fellowships Semi-Finalist. The script has been optioned by Marginal Mediaworks.

Since the pandemic, she’s also brought her comedy shows online, a move which was recently covered in the New York Times.

Zarna has performed for sold out audiences at top clubs across the country, and you can find her each month at the famous Caroline’s on Broadway with her hit show “My American Dream.”

She is one of a handful of female Indian comedians worldwide, and quite possibly the only one who publicly takes on her mother-in-law. Zarna is a rare voice tackling the type of humor few (if any) other Indian immigrant women have attempted before, and represents a demographic with few comedic influences.

Zarna is thrilled to get back on the stage with upcoming shows at Caroline’s on Broadway and at the New York Comedy Festival (which has been postponed due to the pandemic).

A brown middle-aged woman with many opinions and few prospects…

Zarna Garg is a NYC-based Indian auntie – AKA, a brown middle-aged woman with many opinions and few prospects… or so they think. She is a successful businesswoman, lawyer, trained docent, cry-over-the shoulder friend, tell-all loudmouth, supportive life-partner and hysterical, overbearing mom to her three kids. This enriching journey has brought Zarna to the most logical destination for any Indian auntie – becoming a stand-up comedian and a screenwriter.

You know what? This auntie is at the top of her game.

Zarna won Best Comedy Feature Screenplay at the Austin Film Festival in 2019 (out of 11,000 entries) for her romantic comedy script, Rearranged, based on her own life story. The screenplay is also a Semi-Finalist (top 149 out of 7,300) in the 2019 Academy Nicholl Fellowships competition, and it has led her to land a development deal with Rooster Teeth Digital.

A Dream Come True

After a run of successful stand-up shows at major clubs in New York City, nationwide, and abroad, and creating, producing, and performing in the critically acclaimed HinJews stand-up comedy franchise, Zarna is now teaming up with the nation’s premier comedy club, Caroline’s on Broadway for her groundbreaking new show, My American Dream.

I was told my whole life I was funny, but I didn’t know what to do with it.

Zarna is one of a handful of Indian female stand up comedians in the world, and possibly the only one who publicly takes on her mother-in-law (whom she loves very much on days that start with T). She observes life outside America and within it through her unique Indian, immigrant mom prism and tells it like it should be.
